- Excellent sound quality and refined artistic performance
are essential for a good recording.
- The DNS (Digital Natural Sound) recording and
audio production technique is the result of years of research
and experience in acoustics, hi-tech recording equipment and
sound engineering. Our state-of-the-art productions
deliver every nuance of the original interpretation with extremely
natural, transparent and warm sound. We are convinced that
the listening experience should be as close to a live performance
as possible: you should just enjoy the music and completely
forget about the technology involved.
- DNS makes this possible by optimizing the whole audio production
process:
– the required studio equipment is carefully chosen
according to the instruments, the musical style and the environment
involved (with special attention to natural sounding halls
like concert halls, concerts, etc.);
– artistic direction is provided during the recording
sessions to constantly monitor the musical output, to help
the musicians deliver their very best and to ensure that the
whole recorded program meets the required performance standards;
– during editing, the takes with the best interpretation
are musically combined with great care and with particular
attention to details like phrasing, dynamics, color and rubato
nuances;
– mixing is performed using our total-recall, full automated
digital audio workstations; a selection of some of the best
plugin effects is available for sound design and optimization;
we monitor on Quested loudspeakers to hear every detail of
the original performance and make the "right" decisions
about the sound;
– the tracks are then optimized for the final master
– be it audio CD, DVD, film soundtrack or video –
using the most advanced audio DSP technology available today.
- As the quality of a recording is also depending on musical
taste and background, it is essential to know well a wide
range of musical styles: everybody at DNS is a professional
musician with classical, jazz or pop/rock/dance experience.
Name any musical style, and we have the specialist
for it.
- The mastering process plays a very important role in the
final sound of our productions:
– the original environment acoustic is enhanced by detailed
control over the stereo or surround image (for example, Waves
S1) and using advanced virtual room simulation devices (including
the excellent impulse response reverb IR1 by Waves, the
Vincent Burel Aphro V1 or "vintage" digital reverbs
such as the Lexicon PCM91);
– the color of the signal is optimized with vintage-type
"musical" EQs (for example the Nomad Factory Blue
PEQ2A or PEQ2B, which recreate the sound of the famous "Pultec"
EQ) or phase linear digital EQs (Vincent Burel G3 EQ) to delivers
optimal results at any listening volume;
– advanced analog saturation algorithms (for example
Nomad Factory LM2S limiter, or PSP Vintage Warmer) or real
analog compressors are used to achieve a sound with all the
"warm" qualities of vintage analog tape recordings,
without the disadvantages usually associated with that technology
(no additional noise or non-linear distortion are introduced
- however good tape saturation algorithms do introduce a small
amount of "harmonic" distortion which is pleasant
to the ear).
– depending on the music style, the 24-bit or 32-bit
float dynamic range of the mixdown is subtly adapted to fit
the range of the final media (for example a 16-bit audio CD)
using transparent sounding digital compression and limiting,
as well as POW-r or Waves IDR dithering and noise-shaping
algorithms;
- In this way, most of the natural qualities of the original
performance can be enjoyed in the final listening.
- In short, DNS means:
superior sound quality:
it offers all the warmth and the color of vintage analogue
equipment together with the flexibility and sound transparency
of advanced digital sound editing and processing.
efficiency: our editing
facilities are based on very advanced, custom built Digital Audio Workstations so every editing, mixing
and mastering stage is achieved with the highest possible
processing speed – waiting times are simply unknown
to us, and the workstations are so carefully configured that
they can run non-stop for several weeks without experiencing
a single problem; even with complex multitrack productions,
they can deliver enough DSP power to keep all the processing
in realtime - bouncing and mixdowns are hardly ever required;
superior musical performance:
from the recording to the final master the interpretation
is monitored by specialists and the editing is done in the
most logical and "musical" way;
best value for your money:
the whole production process is very efficient and highly
optimized – in other words, we can do more high quality
work in less time – and the final price will positively
surprise you.
