Award for Baroque Instrumental for the production J.
S. Bach - 6 Partitas performed by Trevor Pinnock. Review:
"... The warm, full, rather resonant recording beautifully
captures the rich sound of his fine instrument - a David
Way copy from 1983 of a Hemsch original - as well as the
detail of his playing. ..."

review: "The recorded sound is also excellent.
If you speak while touching the case of a good harpsichord,
you can feel it tremble, as if it were eager to sing. The
sound of this set captures that feeling, being rich, warm,
and resonant, without emphasizing the plucked attacks of
the instrument (a 1983 re-creation by David Way of a Hemsch
original). The occasional low bass notes have delicious
weight, without booming, and when Pinnock uses a damped
stop, the cascading notes illuminate the recording space
in a most pleasing manner."

- Michele Gaggia has been playing keyboard instruments since
the age of 5, got a Diploma in Organ and Composition at
the "J. Tomadini" Conservatory of Music in Udine
in 1988 and a Diploma (with hons.) in Harpsychord at the
University Mozarteum in 1995 (with Prof. Kenneth Gilbert).
- He has followed harpsichord and organ masterclasses with
Ton Koopman, Kenneth Gilbert, Harald Vogel, Françoise
Gerard, and others.
- He has performed solo recitals and chamber music concerts
in Italy, Germany, Austria and Holland; he collaborated
with chamber music ensembles such as the Camerata Academica
(Salzburg), the Salzburger Kammerphilharmonie, and others.
- Between 1985 and 1988 he studied intensively the music
of J. S. Bach, with particular interest in his strict counterpoint
forms as found in the Kunst der Fuge, the Goldberg
Variations, the Musical Offering, and other compositions.
According to Michele Gaggia, the most extraordinary aspect
of Bach's canons was not their complexity, but Bach's ability
to create music of such incredible beauty and emotional
value, while observing the strict rules imposed by these
forms of composition.
- To better understand the "secrets" hidden within
Bach's masterpieces, he started composing in strict "baroque"
style Il Gioco delle Perle, a series of canonic variations
for organ, and other complex forms of choral and double-canon.
In 1987 Il Gioco delle Perle was performed for
the Norddeutsche Orgelakademie, with enthusiastic
response from the press.
- Michele Gaggia started performing and programming analogue
and digital synthesizer back in 1985; he has developed a
large private library of synthesizer sounds and samples
and is currently an expert in modern sound synthesis techniques.
He performs live on synthesizers as well as on historic
instruments.
- He has co-arranged and composed for a number of productions
in different musical styles, including classic, jazz, pop-rock,
techno, trance and avant-garde. See the CD
Production page for more information.
